Spain score dramatic stoppage time equalizer to draw with Germany (1-1): UEFA Nations League

Final Score: Germany 1(Werner 53') -1(Gaya 90') Spain

Spain scored a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser through Jose Luis Gaya to draw 1-1 away to Germany on Thursday in their Nations League opener and first international in almost 10 months due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Local lad Timo Werner opened the scoring six minutes after half-time, threading a low shot between two defenders to beat Spain GK David de Gea to give the hosts the lead.

"We fought hard and I am a bit frustrated with that late equaliser," said Germany coach Joachim Low.

"But I am satisfied with the effort. We pressured them, did not often allow them to get in the game. We had the better chances and given we have never played in this lineup we did it well."

It looked like Spain is failing to score for the first time after 40 consecutive games before Gaya scored the dramatic equalizer with the last kick of the game.

Germany announced a new-looking playing 11 with only one player from Bayern Munich and all RB Leipzig's international after the UCL. The German side suffered a few defensive lapses in the first half which provided Spain with their only two chances in the first half through Rodrigo. Atalanta's Robin Gosens made his international debut fr the Bavarians and what a debut it was. He set up Timo Werner's second-half strike and played the full 90 minutes.

Kevin Trapp, Germany's number 3 goalkeeper in the pecking order (after Neuer and Ter-Stegan), did well to deny the visitors, who were playing in coach Luis Enrique's first game in charge since he returned to the Spain role last November.

The visitors also announced a much changed team,  and introduced three newcomers with Ansu Fati being one of them. Fati is the youngest Spanish player since 1936.

"We fought, stayed focused and as a first test the team did it good," said Spain captain Sergio Ramos. "We remained concentrated and kept up the pressure and we were rewarded in the end."

The Germans next travel to Switzerland on Sunday, while Spain host Ukraine
